Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship is something that has become more and more important as technology as well as its use continues to become more popular to all ages and groups of people. One way that I have seen digital citizenship defined would be that “Digital citizenship is the continuously developing norms of appropriate, responsible, and empowered technology use” (Digitalcitizenship.net). This is a very good definition of digital citizenship in my eyes. Another definition that I was able to find very accurate is “Digital citizenship refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the Internet, and digital devices to engage with society on any level” (Zook). I believe that these two definitions of digital citizenship are very accurate and would use very similar definitions to introduce the topic to someone who has never heard of it. I would describe it as being a good person in every space of the internet and technology as a very simple definition.

I believe that digital literacy and digital citizenship are similar, however, there are differences that can distinguish one from the other. For example, digital literacy is the ability and the knowledge of how to be active online as well as engage in good ways. I believe that digital citizenship is the choice to be a good person as well as active contributer in all different types of social interaction online. I think that it is the choice to be a good person online to promote positivity. In one of our articles from this week they talk about digital citizenship stating “a strong understanding of digital citizenship is essential for students of all ages to be able to make smart choices online and in life” (Ottesen). This is supporting my idea that it is about actively making smart choices online rather than just understanding how to be accurate online.
There are many ways that digital citizenship can be used to help people of all ages be more successful online. Especially within young adults. There are many ways for people who are learning to use digital citizenship to be able to teach others. One of these examples would be to have students create presentations or other methods of teaching and teach the rest of the class or the other students what they have learned. This would create a sense of teaching and learning all due to digital citizenship. Also, collaborative learning is a great part of digital citizenship that can induce lots of learning for adults.
When participating online it is very important for all users to engage is digital citizenship as best as they can. This can lead to everyones time online being much more productive as well as successful and positive. There are a lot of ways that we can use digital citizenship to promote learning and other beneficial activities within education and all other aspects of social interaction when online.
